Chepstow Archaeology Fair + special lecture

10am–3pm: Free entry
Step back through the centuries at the Chepstow Archaeology Fair, a fascinating and hands-on day celebrating archaeology, heritage and local history. Concluding with a special lecture by Professor Mark Horton at 4pm (£5pp).
With activities suitable for all ages, there will be plenty to see, touch and try, from traditional crafts and archaeological finds to Roman artefacts, historic weaponry and demonstrations of heritage skills.
Hands-on heritage and archaeology
Get involved with a fantastic range of traditional crafts, including:
- Medieval tile making
- Clay pipe making
- Willow craft
- Spinning
- Corn dolly making
- Tapestry making, inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry
- Copper engraving
- Lace making and crewel work
You’ll also have the chance to handle archaeological finds, including bones and ceramics, and see displays of Bronze Age metalwork.
For those with an interest in the more unusual side of history, there will be medical instruments dating from Roman to Victorian times, as well as demonstrations of archery equipment and techniques.
You can also meet the Black Rock Lave Net Heritage fishermen from the Severn and discover more about this unique local tradition.
Meet the experts
Professional archaeologists will be on hand throughout the day, including Katie Churchill and Black Mountain Archaeology, with information about the Heritage Crime Unit. Adam Sanford will also be showcasing some of the latest hi-tech equipment used in modern archaeology.
The MOD Casualties Unit will demonstrate their work recovering and honouring human remains from historic battle sites, while a VR display from the Newport Ship will offer the chance to explore maritime archaeology in an immersive way.

Local history and archaeological societies will have stands showcasing their work and the fascinating stories they uncover, including:
- Caerleon Young Archaeologist Group
- Monmouthshire Antiquarians
- Shirenewton History Group
- Dean Archaeology Group
- The Chepstow Society
Heritage organisations including Heneb will also be represented, alongside our good friends and collaborators at SARA.
History comes to life!
Adding to the atmosphere will be a Welsh harpist, while three Roman soldiers from Caerleon and a Civil War soldier in historical uniform will be making an appearance!
It promises to be a brilliant day for anyone interested in archaeology, history and heritage, whether you’re a lifelong enthusiast or simply curious about the past.

4PM: Professor Mark Horton lecture
The day will conclude with a special lecture at 4pm from renowned archaeologist Professor Mark Horton, well known for his appearances on Time Team and Coast, and a familiar face to many in Chepstow.
Mark will explore the intriguing question: “Sextus Julius Frontinus: the architect of Chepstow’s first Roman bridge?”
Expect an interesting, entertaining and provocative exploration of Chepstow’s Roman past.
